Help Your Car Beat the Heat This Summer
Summer’s hot temperatures can take their toll on your vehicle. Extreme heat can push your car past its limits, and may find you stranded on the roadside. Here are some tips to help your car beat the summer’s heat.
Battery
Car batteries are not just a winter concern, but a summer one too. Hot temperatures can actually have an even more damaging effect on your battery than the cold. Making sure that your battery is securely mounted in order to avoid any vibration is crucial, as well as – if it’s an unsealed battery – making sure that the fluids are topped up. If the battery has all of its fluid evaporated you’re going to breakdown.
Cooling System
Your vehicles cooling system needs to be flushed periodically as well as have coolant levels topped up. Make sure to NEVER remove the radiator cap when your car’s engine is hot. Ensure that the engine is cool before adding the coolant.
Tyres
If your tyre pressure is low, it can cause your tyres to overheat and increase your likelihood of a blown tyre. This is especially true if the road is hot! Regularly check your cars tyre pressure, including the spare, following the pressure redocumentations of your vehicles manual or on the tyre information in your glove box. For the most accurate reading, you should check the tyre pressure while the tyres are cool.
Top Up Fluids
Most of the fluids in your vehicle lubricate and serve as coolants by helping to remove heat from critical components. Periodically check: motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid. Ensure that all of these are at the appropriate levels in order to avoid overheating and breakdowns.
Get It Serviced
It’s a good idea to book your car in to see the mechanic before summer hits. Your mechanic can help ensure everything is in precise working order, repair any damage before there’s an issue and make sure that all of the fluids, electronics, engine, batteries and tyres are all in peak performance.
Be Prepared
Even with preventative measures taken, breakdowns and overheating can still happen. So, make sure that your car is stocked with emergency equipment. This should include: water, jumper cables, a flashlight, batteries for the flashlight, road flares, hand tools, a spare tyre, a tyre changing kit and a first aid kit.
